Goat Milk Facts For Thursday Thirteen


This is my 12th Thursday 13!

  1. Goat's milk is the number one consumed milk in the world (70%);
  2. Goat's milk is much less popular in the United States, but steadily gaining popularity;
  3. It is used to make cream, cheese, butter, ice cream, yogurt, candy, soap and other body products;
  4. Goat milk is whiter than whole cow milk;
  5. It is believed that goats were the first domesticated animal;
  6. There are cave paintings of goats;
  7. Goat milk has the same amount of protein, vitamins C, and D as cow milk;
  8. Goat milk is high in vitamins A, B, Riboflavin.
  9. Goat milk is high in minerals, calcium, potassium, magnesium, thiamin, niacin, and phosphorus.
  10. Goat's milk is naturally homegenized, which means the cream remains suspended in the milk, instead of rising to the top.
  11. Like human milk, goat's milk does not have the alpha S1 casein protein.
  12. Many people who are lactose intolerant can digest goat's milk, in part because of this missing protein.
  13. Goat's milk can be used in dessert recipes calling for milk.

  1. My hubby was allergic to cow's milk as a child so he could only drink goat's milk growing up. Personally, I've never tried it. As an adult, the hubby now tolerates cow's milk so we only buy that. Very interesting facts, however. Thanks!

  2. Very interesting information. I'm Greek and grew up eating Feta cheese which is made from goats milk. Love the stuff. I thought it was really bad for you. It's good to know it's not as bad as I thought. Great TT!

  5. You made me so hungry! I like goaats milk yogurt and I love feta cheese. I always thought it would be fun to have a pet goat.

    I also once had a goat cheese that tasted like caramel...it was so good.

  7. And that is why my husband raised and milked goat for a couple of years. A good friends child couldn't have any of the formulas and goats milk wasn't canned at the time. I like goat milk cheeses they just seem creamier. A Mexican food resteraunt we enjoy uses only goat cheese -- yummmmm.

  9. i remember my baby brother drank goat milk in the 60s as he couldn't tolerate either breast milk, cow milk or formula.

  10. My grandparents had goats when I was growing up, so we drank goat's milk! But I had no idea it was the most popular milk in the world! Who would have ever thought?
