Prize-winning, quick and easy mock mince pie recipe

keep calmMy poor old 1943 Household Searchlight Recipe Book is falling apart more and more. It was already old and tattered when I acquired it, with stains and splatters, even torn endpapers, a partially torn page and a fragile leather cover. It still has that wonderful leather smell.

Blogging it's dessert recipes for more than a year and a half now, and using it in my own kitchen has worn it even more. The front cover nearly fell off this week despite my many precautions. Sigh. It is holding on by that proverbial thread, or about an inch of leather at the top. It is old, but to be treasured and preserved all the more.

So many have googled it's recipes, and I hope my regular readers have tried some of them too. My family has loved all the desserts and savory dishes we have tried from it's pages. Of course, there are some recipes I decided not to bother making or sharing just looking at the list of ingredients, but overall this book is filled with delicious recipes.

Today. I've decided to preserve a Mock Mince Pie recipe. It's one of the prize-winners! It's super easy too. I love pies year round, and Fall though Winter are great times to enjoy them with extended family and friends. There's no need to wait for Christmas either! I hope you're not afraid of making a crust, but if you are, just buy a good quality one. Remember to look at the ingredient list to make sure it is worthy of your family.







Mock Mince Pie Recipe (A Prize-Winning Recipe)
Minced Meat Pie.
1 cup chopped raisins
5 large crackers, rolled fine
1 egg,, well beaten
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup vinegar
1 cup sugar
1 cup cold strong tea
1 tablespoon butter
few grains of salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon allspice

Combine ingredients. Mix thoroughly. Pour into pastry-lined pie pan. Cover with top crust. Bake in hot oven (425 F.) about 25 minutes. Mrs. Carrie A. Ritter, Utica, N.Y.

  1. I've never had mince pie. I don't like raisins. But I would at least try a bite, if it ever crossed my path.

  2. My mom is British and I grew up with her making mince pies. Little ones in a tin like a muffin pan but shallow, rounded openings. When Tammie & I get together every Thanksgiving at NC beach house my mom always comes AND brings her mince pies. She tops them with pastry, a little egg/milk and sprinkled sugar. I have great memories associated with these pies.
