Vintage Recipe Linky Party: Banana Fritters Recipe

In this day and age many, perhaps most people are concerned about health and staying slim. Yet more and more are becoming obese. We have TV shows like The Biggest Loser. It used to be that the "fat kid" in class was the odd ball. Today, those kids are the norm in our child's school. Isn't it odd that in earlier decades people could eat a Breakfast of Champions with cholesterol-laden eggs, grease-packed bacon, and a fat steak while remaining skinny? Or how about doughnuts and fruit fritters? Today, we find women surviving on salads, grand-parents restricting after-school snacks, real dads going to the gym, and young children dieting. Does it work? Of course not. Our country is becoming fatter.

banana fritters with vanilla ice cream and toffee sauceMy theory? It's all the genetically modified foods, the chemicals, the artificial additives, the corn syrup, the preservatives, the ingredients we can't pronounce, the man-created laboratory experiments they call food. We are treated like guinea pigs, and too many of us pay for this poor nutrition. We pay twice. Once at the cash register, and again with our health.

My solution? Eat a wide variety of real foods, preferably organic, use moderation and stay active. That's what families in earlier decades and centuries did. There was no such thing as TV dinners, fast foods or 24-hour gyms. And organic? There was nothing else. Even it they didn't have a term for it, all food was organic.

And people could enjoy some banana fritters like the recipe I'm sharing with you today.

Fritter Batter Recipe
Banana Fritters
1 cup flour
1/3 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 cup milk
Sift flour, measure, and sift with sugar and salt. Combine eggs and milk. Add dry ingredients. Mix until smooth. The amount of sugar may be decreased to suit the sweetness of the fruit.

Banana Fritters Recipe
3 bananas
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon orange juice
2 teaspoons grated orange rind
Peel bananas. Quarter. Sprinkle with sugar, lemon and orange juice, and orange rind. Cover. Let stand 30 minutes. Dip in fritter batter. Fry in deep fat (365 F.) until brown. Drain on crumpled absorbent paper. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with lemon sauce. 6 servings.

Monday Dessert Recipe Linky Party Time

Linky party time! Come link up your dessert recipes.

Here are just a few of the delicious recipes from last week's participants:
Cares and Mimi of From Which Things Grow shared their Caramel Sauce Recipe. Stop buying your caramel sauce at the store. You can make your own in no time. It's easy and so tasty.

The Local Cook shared a Pear Custard Pie, a great Fall dessert. It's another easy recipe and can be baked in only 30 minutes.

Have you ever had the sweet pleasure of tasting a Chocolate Babka? Joy of Create with Joy shared her version of Martha Stewart's recipe. Babkas are made with yeast, so you'll have to wait for it to rise, but it's not difficult, and so worth the time.

Fall, Thanksgiving Dessert: Easy Squash Honey Pie Recipe

We're still in summer weather mode here in California, but I know many parts of the country are ready for Fall recipes, so I've picked out a delicious Squash Honey Pie Recipe. It can become a new tradition for your Thanksgiving tables and all through Fall. Add more honey to taste if you prefer.

For Thanksgiving I always have three standard desserts which family and friends request -- Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie and Apple Tart. It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving for them without these desserts, but each year I also have a new dessert or two on the table depending on how many guests we are welcoming into our home, or perhaps to bring as a hostess gift or Autumn party potluck item. I don't mind having plenty of extras for any party as everyone always loves to take those home. Pies and tarts make particularly tasty breakfasts too, and used to be common breakfast fare as a matter of fact.

Link up your vintage desserts. What traditional desserts do you serve in the Fall and for Thanksgiving?  Holidays are often a time when we will make recipes which have been in the family for a generation or more, so share with all of us, won't you?

Be sure to follow proper blogging etiquette. Problems with spammers are forcing me to delete anyone not following the rules.

Dessert Recipes Wanted: Linky Party!

Ready to link up your dessert recipes? Which wonderful desserts will you share with all of us this week?

I'm highlighting Kolaches, Oatmeal Cherry Cookies and Banana Brown Sugar Ice Cream from last week's participants.

Let's all wish a Happy Birthday to Trish of Sweetology who shared a beautiful and touching post about her love for her grandmother. She included two recipes, a traditional Kolaches recipe just like her grandma used to make, and pumpkin Kolaches with cinnamon cream for a Fall variation.

Next up is a Banana Brown Sugar ice cream made with coconut milk from Gloria of Canela Kitchen. She adapted it from a David Lebovitz recipe and even gives you directions on how to make ice cream when you don't have an ice cream maker.

A warm welcome to Ashlee of Capernaum Home who brought us some Oatmeal Cherry Cookies with optional chocolate chips added. Yes, please! Cherries and chocolate go quite well together, and most of us do love chocolate. :-)

Link up your desserts below. Please be sure to follow the basic rules. Thanks.

Have a great Monday, everyone!

Vintage Recipe: Magic Coconut Orange Loaf Cake

Happy Thursday to all! It's time for more vintage recipes. I try to preserve these gems for another generation. You are invited to preserve your own vintage recipes, your mom's, grandmother's, aunt's or vintage recipes from old cookbooks, postcards, adverting, etc. So many are quite delicious, some are hilarious. So whether you want to honor a loved one's recipe or give us a "what were they thinking" chuckle, please link up your vintage recipes below. I can't wait to see what you have to share. Today, I'm taking a break from my vintage cookbook to share an old advertising recipe for a tasty coconut orange cake. It's a Canadian brand since 1897.

Magic Baking Powder Coconut Orange Loaf

Magic Baking Powder2 1/2 cups once-sifted all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
3 1/2 teaspoons Magic Baking Powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon mace
3 teaspoons orange rind
1/2 cup orange juice
3/4 cup milk
2 eggs, well beaten
2 tablespoons Planters Peanut Oil
1/2 cup shredded coconut
1 cup seedless raisins
Preheat oven to 350 F. (moderate). Sift together into a large bowl the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and mace. Add orange rind. Make a well in center. Combine, then add the orange juice, milk, eggs, and oil. Stir until just blended. Stir in coconut and raisins. Pour batter into a well-greased 4 1/2" X 8 1/2" loaf pan. Bake for one hour or until done.

Mmm ... Desserts! It's a Linky Party! Come join the fun!

This might sound a bit like a jam commercial, but with a name like Man-Catching Peanut Butter Cookies, it's got to be good! I think many of us might have man-catching -- and keeping -- recipes. One of mine were chocolate truffles. :-) Go take a peek at my Chocolate Truffles Recipe. I have fond memories of those truffles, and they have become a tradition at our home. Ashton of Something Swanky shares her college-days recipe that caught the attention of several men for her roommates and herself. Yes, her own husband was caught with a tiny bit of help from a cookie.

Lots of peanut butter and chocolate recipes were linked last week, and Andi, The Wednesday Baker, brought a Peanut Butter Squares Recipe for all of us to enjoy. There's no need to turn on the oven, these treats are made right on the stove top, which is so great for those scorching days of summer like the ones we just survived. It's fast and easy even for cooler days and great to give to anyone on your Christmas cookie exchange list.

Blessed Girl is a new blogger you might not have met yet, so go visit Blessed Girl's Kitchen to welcome her to the blogging neighborhood. She brought a tasty variation on cheesecake. Her Sopapilla Cheesecake is wrapped in croissant dough, and made with Neufchatel cheese which has more protein and less fat than the traditional cream cheese -- which is something we want, right?

Leave your participating dessert recipes below, and please remember to follow basic blogging etiquette. I unfortunately will have to delete any bloggers' links which do not. It has to be a dessert, you have to link back, link to your recipe, and try your best to visit fellow participants. It's all just common sense and common courtesy for all.

Have a great Monday, everyone!

Easy grape juice custard recipe or favorite juice custard

Welcome back to Vintage Recipe Thursday! Sometimes we need a quick and tasty recipe to serve just one person. It might be a quick snack for ourselves, or it might be for a child. This is exactly what I found in my vintage cookbook, and it can easily be doubled too. The grape juice made me think of back-to-school. It's a favorite of many children. Feel free to use just about any kind of juice. I think a coconut custard would be quite tasty. Other good choices would be cherry, apricot, apple, or peach.
