Foodie And Other Blogs Worth A Second Look

I was partying all last week with the Ultimate Blog Party and with about 2,000 blogs participating it's pretty much impossible for most people to see all of them so I am sharing a short list with you of the blogs I thought were worth a second look. Here they are in no particular order -- this is just the way I happened upon them. I hope this helps all of us find a new blog friend or two.

Giveaway: I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti

I have another great giveaway for you!!

Hachette Book Group is again generously giving 5 copies of their latest food-related release to my readers (due out April 8th.). It's part autobiography, part cookbook. The deadline for the giveaway is April 30, 2009 so you have a full month to enter, and to tell everybody about this great new book and giveaway. Here's what the publisher is saying about it:

I LOVED, I LOST, I MADE SPAGHETTI
By Giulia Melucci

From failure to fusilli, this deliciously hilarious read tells the story of Giulia Melucci's fizzled romances and the mouth-watering recipes she used to seduce her men, smooth over the lumps, and console herself when the relationships flamed out.

From an affectionate alcoholic, to the classic New York City commitment-phobe, to a hipster aged past his sell date, and not one, but two novelists with Peter Pan complexes, Giulia has cooked for them all. She suffers each disappointment with resolute cheer (after a few tears) and a bowl of pastina (recipe included) and has lived to tell the tale so that other women may go out, hopefully with greater success, and if that's not possible, at least have something good to eat.

Peppered throughout Giulia's delightful and often poignant remembrances are fond recollections of her mother's cooking, the recipes she learned from her, and many she invented on her own inspired by the men in her life. Readers will howl at Giulia's boyfriend-littered past and swoon over her irresistible culinary creations.

Giulia Melucci was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY where she still lives, but in a more fashionable neighborhood. She is the former VP of PR for Harper's Magazine, and previously worked at Spy Magazine, Atlantic Monthly Press, Viking, Dutton and Scribner. Announcing New Carnival: Vintage Recipe Thursday

I'm so excited!! I'm taking you with me on a voyage back in time to rediscover wonderful desserts which cannot become forgotten.

I love old cookbooks, and I was delighted to find a great one at my local Friends of the Library shop.

It was first published during the Depression Era, and my 16th printing is from World War II. It is full of money-saving, penny-pinching, extra-flavorful recipes, which is just right for all of us in this economy of extreme recession.

It's out-of-print, the copyright is expired, and the publisher, Household Searchlight, which survived both the Great Depression and World War II, did not survive modern times, so YOU are in luck as I will be reprinting recipes each Thursday.

If you are lucky enough to have such old cookbooks where you don't have to worry about copyrights, feel free to participate with me for Vintage Recipe Thursday.

Your original, old family recipes are more than welcome too!

Let's help each other pinch pennies and save these recipe gems from being forgotten.

You can click to the Vintage Recipe Thursday Homepage right now for a link to easy directions on how to participate.

Welcome To My 2nd Ultimate Blog Party!!

Ultimate Blog Party 2009

Welcome to the Ultimate Blog Party!!

I'm so glad you stopped by, and I hope we'll become blog friends.

I'm French and I blog from California, where I live with my husband and young son. I started this dessert blog a year ago (my blog-iversary was March 3! WOOHOO!!) just as a test to see if I would like the Blogger platform, but it had such immediate success that I never started the mommy slice of life with a French joie de vivre twist which I had planned to write.

I've been having a blast and from all the great comments from my regular readers, I think they've been pretty happy too.

Besides, I want this blog to be FUN and a lot more than just a series of recipes. That's why I take my readers on fieldtrips to yummy foodie places like the Laduree Tea Salon in Paris; I have great giveaways (the last one was a cookbook written by comedienne Amy Sedaris and the next giveaway is in April so be sure to check back here); and I host fun recipe roundups like my We All Scream for Ice Cream! roundup. There's always something new and unexpected, all with a dessert theme.

Does CHOCOLATE make you happy??!! My next roundup will be on Monday, April 20, and we will celebrate the Joy Of Chocolate! Yum!! I can't wait to see what you all come up with! :-)

I'm also launching a new weekly carnival called Vintage Recipe Thursday. Vintage Recipe Thursday (VRT) is meant to preserve out-of-print, copyright-free recipes from old cookbooks, magazines or newspapers. You can also post your own original vintage family recipes. Click on the link for the details. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3!

So come on friends, FOLLOW ME and we'll have lots of FUN together!!!

  • For our lovely hostesses and Pamela: Here are the prize numbers of what I would love to win should I be picked.
  • #58 -- My absolute favorite. With a dessert blog I do a lot of baking, including breads, so I not only want the Kitchen Aid Artisan Stand Mixer generously donated by Moms Who Think, but I also NEED it! It would also give me lots to blog about.

Fast, Easy Brie En Croute Apple Compote Dessert

This was the dessert I prepared for my family last night. Easy, fast and delicious. The puff pastry was store-bought for those days when we are just too busy or too famished to wait. The entire recipe can be assembled in less than a half hour.

Anything "en croute" or in a crust, means it is in a pastry shell. Somehow puff pastry makes everything taste better and more elegant, don't you think?

The apple compote adds some sweetness and additional moistness for a melt-in-your mouth, satisfying finale to your meal.

Brie En Croute Apple Compote Dessert

INGREDIENTS
  • Brie wedge about 3-4" wide
  • Store-bought puff pastry
  • Egg yolk or milk (optional)
  • 4 Golden Delicious apples
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • Juice of 1/4 of a lemon
Take a wedge of brie. Scrape off the white part, but leave the rest of the crust.
Wrap it in a sheet of store-bought puff pastry making any preferred shape. You can use an egg yolk or a bit of milk to paint the top for a golden crust.
Place it in your toaster oven at 350 F until golden (about 15-20 min.).

While the pastry is baking, peel, core and slice apples.
Place in large saucepan. Add 1/2 cup of sugar. Squeeze the juice of 1/4 of a lemon. Let macerate for a few minutes. Cook over medium heat until apples are soft and sugar has become a golden brown caramelized syrup (about 5-10 minutes).

Serve apple compote over baked brie.

Enjoy!

P.S.: Joie de vivre brought up a very interesting point in comments. You might be interested to read it and my reply about eating cheeses and desserts.
Thank you, Joie de vivre. :-)

Authentic Macarons Des Soeurs From City of Nancy

There is only one authentic macaron in all of France. It is from the city of Nancy in the Lorraine region. While many pastry shops in Nancy and throughout France will sell macarons, the original and authentic macarons recipe is from the Macarons des Soeurs, the nuns who created this almond cookie in 1793.

It remains a secret recipe to this day. While the basic ingredients are simple, egg whites, ground almonds and sugar, which are piped into circles on a baking sheet, getting a perfect cookie, light as air with a thin crunchy crust and a moist inside is tricky. So is getting the cookie to crackle just right. You'll probably notice that most macarons sold outside of Nancy do not have the characteristic cracks. The Macarons des Soeurs are never stuffed or sandwiched with ganache like the macarons Ladurée later created.

The Macarons de Nancy are the type of macarons I ate when I was living in France and they are one of my favorite treats. They are often imitated, but never equaled.

Ladurée One of Paris' First Tea Salons

Ladurée is one of Paris' first tea salons and remains one of the most famous -- so famous, in fact, that Boucheron, one of Paris' and the world's leading luxury jewelers, dedicated an entire jewelry line to Jeanne Souchard, its founder, as I wrote about in the previous post, Boucheron Immortalizes Ladurée Macarons.

So today I'm sharing with you just what Ladurée, their pastries and signature macarons look like as well as just a bit of their history.

The house of Ladurée opened as a bread bakery in 1862 at 16 Rue Royale by Louis Ernest Ladurée.

Nine years later, a fire prompted a whole new look, and his wife, Jeanne Souchard, conceived the idea to transform the bakery into a tea salon -- part café, part pâtisserie -- where women could freely go even if unaccompanied by a man.

Soon Parisians were going to the tea salons to see and be seen much as today's American teens go to the mall.

The decor was put in the hands of Jules Cheret, a famous painter and poster artist of the end of the 19th century, who used lots of cherubs and Chinoiserie motif, which was popular at the time.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ladurée's cousin Pierre Desfontaines thought of taking two plain almond macarons and sandwiching them with a ganache, Oreo-style, thus creating Ladurée's signature cookie. Each half of this almond cookie is slightly crunchy on the thin outside crust while remaining soft and moist on the inside.

Boucheron Immortalizes Ladurée Macarons

Paris luxury jeweler Boucheron immortalizes Ladurée macarons in part of this year's collection titled Gaieté Parisienne (Parisian Joy) with their new line, Gourmandise, which includes Tentation Macarons rings, pendants, necklaces and earings.

It's modern, 21st. century and someone has already taken a bite out of each macaron as you can see from the teeth marks in the pictures. These macarons which come in eight colors, made of tsavorites, multicoloured sapphires, amethysts, garnets or diamonds, may be calorie-free, but they will take a real bite out of your wallet. The least expensive rings run from 4990 euros to 7500 euros, depending on the stones chosen.

The entire Gourmandise line was dedicated to Ladurée's Jeanne Souchard, founder of one of the first Parisian tea rooms.

"We've taken a radical approach about fun," said Jean-Christophe Bédos, chief executive of Boucheron in an article by Suzy Menkes. "This is an opportunity to reinvent ourselves, moving from the 20th to the 21st century. We have to innovate -- to invent the rules of a new game. It's not about being gray and sad."

Picture Yourself Cooking With Your Kids!

Get ready to make some culinary memories with your children or grandchildren. "Picture Yourself Cooking with Your Kids" is just the cookbook to help you and your children create deliciously healthy meals.

Beth Sheresh of Kitchen Mage has taken her writing beyond her blog to her own cookbook published through Course Technology Cengage Learning.

I know many of us bloggers dream of getting our books published, so I'm spreading the word of her success and hope you will support her, especially since her book does deserve to become a beloved family heirloom on your bookshelf.

First of all, let me tell you how pleased I was to see that she did not talk down to children. If you've looked for children's cookbooks, you already know how difficult it is to find a quality book which has not dumbed down the recipes and text.

This cooking text would also be great for adult beginner cooks, since unlike most cookbooks, it is not simply a series of recipes that take for granted that you already know how to cook and are familiar with cooking jargon.

Beth's "Picture Yourself Cooking with Your Kids" also has real recipes, not just snacks. A family can eat real and healthy breakfasts, lunches and dinners. There's even a convenient Freezes Well graphic for such recipes. This cookbook will help you share with children memories and cooking skills that will last a lifetime.

In some sections she speaks to the parents, in others to the children, and throughout the book you will find lots and lots of full-color photos to help children see step by step what to expect.

In addition to the easy-to-follow directions and photos, Beth has put together an essential section called A Cook's Primer with headings like Organic Food, Helping Kids Eat Better, Dealing With Picky Eaters, Defensive Shopping, Stretching Your Food Budget and Making a Kid-Friendly Kitchen.

"Picture Yourself Cooking" is chock-full of colorful boxes to catch everybody's attention with Notes, Cook's Tips and Try This variations, packing lots of information in an easy-to-spot, undaunting format.

Beth put a lot of thought and work into this book. And like with most nonfiction books, a lot of people helped Beth create "Picture Yourself Cooking with Your Kids." Most of her contributors are fellow bloggers you might be interested in, so I'm linking to each one of them.
